On the occasion of the 9th
anniversary of Chiara’s departure to heaven (14/03/2008), we send you this
short reflection of hers:
“I feel I live in me all the creatures of the world,
all the Communion of Saints. Really: because my own self is humanity with all the people that were, are,
and will be. I feel and I live this reality: because I feel in my soul both
the delight of Heaven and the anguish of humanity that is all a great Jesus Forsaken. And I want to
live Him totally, this Jesus Forsaken. I live Him adding the drop of my pain of
the moment (...) to His”.
A’
Jesus Abandonado. Eu o vivo, acrescentando a gota do meu sufrimento do momento

Dear religious and friends
of Africa,
Many warm
greetings from the Centre in Rome!
It is
already nearly three months since our last issue of December 2016. At that
time, we had just concluded the meeting for religious and those in formation
connected with the Focolare Movement at the Mariapoli Piero in Nairobi. In this
issue of ‘News and Sharing’ you will find some experiences of the participants
in this meeting.
For 2017,
the good news is that thanks to the initiative of the Focolare in Kinshasa
another meeting for religious and seminarians connected with the Movement will
take place in Lubumbashi (DR Congo). There will be a meeting for major
seminarians and religious in formation from the 27th of June till the 2nd of
July and for priests and religious from the 3rd of July till the 8th of July.
We hope and pray that many will be able to participate.
In 2018,
we are planning to organize a similar meeting in Southern Africa and in 2019 in
Western Africa. The idea being that, as a follow-up of each big meeting,
smaller groups of religious and those in formation continue to meet on a
regular basis in order to deepen the spirituality of communion and exchange
experiences on the Word of Life.
It may be
good to know that in other parts of the world the same initiatives are taking
place, so that we can unite ourselves with them as well. So far, there have
been meetings of religious and those in formation in Italy, Brazil, The
Philippines, Spain, Argentina, Canada and others are being planned in Indonesia
and Austria.
In order
to have some information about all these meetings, you can go to the new blog of the Centre of the religious by
‘googling’ centroreligiosi.blogspot.it In this way it becomes easy to remain in
touch and strengthen our unity from a distance.
As for
myself, I am coming to the end of my ‘sabbatical’ at the Centre of the
religious. I will be leaving Albano at the beginning of May 2017 in the hope to
return to Africa soon. I am grateful for this nice experience and I will remain
in touch with all of you via ‘News and Sharing’.
All of us
at the Centre wish you a holy Lenten Season, letting ourselves be reconciled
with God (Word of Life of March) in preparation for the great celebration of
our Lord’s suffering, death and resurrection. Happy Easter!

novo blog do Centro do religioso acessando centroreligiosi.blogspot.it. Desta

The following sharing
is coming from the participants to the “School for Religious” held at the
Mariapolis Piero in Juja (Nairobi) from 8th to 12th
December 2016:
On a personal point of view, the three days meeting was sincerely of its
own kind and I think it was through the will of God in the spirit of Chiara
that this took place.
I would like to say that my brothers and I arrived here with some fear
but within a short time, things remained normal as we received warm welcome
from Brother Leo and Philemon and from Father John and Fr. Eusebius. They never
forgot our names, since the moment that we introduced ourselves. .
Our stay here, personally has been so
beautiful to say, it is the place where I felt to be a real member of Focolare
because we tried to do exactly what Chiara intended the Focolarini to do.
The meals were generally wonderful; sharing
was fantastic especially all that was talked about Chiara. I enjoyed the spirit
of brotherhood, praying together and the concern that we had for each other.
However, in a special way, I would say from
the depth of my heart, a big thanks to Brother Leo for leading us in the
general running of the program and I say God bless you more and continue with
the same spirit. Fr John, you are a gentleman and feel appreciated for the
mature contribution throughout the sessions, you really enlightened us. Fr
Eusebius, you are wonderful and so rich in ideas but more especially practical
ideas as we saw in these few days of our togetherness. My dear brothers too I
enjoyed the spirit of oneness.
Sincerely, I pray it continues.
Finally, thank you God for leading us throughout the sharing, thanks
Chiara for whom we were able to talk about. May God bless us so that we may be
true members of the Movement.
Egidio
Avella, AJ
I have found out that the spirituality of
Focolare movement, which is built around 12 pillars (key ideas), is a clear
basis to understand God more clearly. Chiara, after explaining, in a concrete
way, how we should love each other, setting the indubitable foundation of unity
among the communities, through the understanding of the love and suffering
nature, which Jesus also faced when he took the human nature. On the cross, he
cried out “my God, my God, why have you forsaken me”, but he overcame the great
suffering by abandoning his spirit to the Father.
Moreover, through the experiences and sharing
of the original writings and videos of Chiara, I was enlightened and found much
enrichment for my soul. Within my heart there was a fire burning, willing to
spread it and so to fulfill the prayer of Jesus: “may all be one”.
Sixtus
Wanagoli, AJ
For the days I have been here 8th –
12th Dec 2016, I have learnt a lot that I find a little bit
difficult to express but hoping that God will explain better my feelings. Allow
me to put it this way: before I came here, I just had a glimpse of the ‘idea’
but as I go back, I hold it tenderly to my chest. I have been a Christian all
along but not until this time at Mariapolis that my Christian living has been
greatly illumined. I unlimitedly thank Chiara, her companions and you my
brothers who have left no stone unturned in an effort to project the idea to
the furthest ends of this planet earth. I am only left with a burning question
deep inside me, ‘how can I deepen the Ideal in me, so that I am inseparable
from the it?’ If this question is answered, I pledge my total commitment to
live the ideal for the rest of my life.
May almighty God bless each one of you
abundantly for giving me an opportunity of being in a paradise from 8-12th
Dec 2016.
Dominic Niyoikiza, AJ
I have felt that Jesus was among us. He has
given me strength to continue my journey with Him in all that will come to me. The
sharing with the people of this small city has been fruitful to me. We enjoyed
the company of Deo and James, who cared for our food. Giovanna helped us to
understand better Jesus Forsaken as the highest expression of love. I was happy
with the video about the different classes, the hide and seek game that will
help me to welcome him wherever He comes to me. I as well was happy to take on
the responsibility that was given with the different colors. Everybody did his
best to do his part. This meeting was for me a new beginning and I have seen a
bit of our way forward. I really hope and pray that we can go beyond our own
limits and make time for the next meeting on the 14th of January,
the second Saturday of the month.
I want to say my ‘yes’ to Him wherever He
appears to build unity wherever I will be.

December
12, 2016, Our Lady of Guadalupe and Jamhuri day in Kenya
At this moment, I feel to thank the Lord to
have given me the gift to come to Kenya and especially to the Mariapolis Piero
and enjoy the unity of all of you. It is always sad to leave, like the three
Apostles on the mount Tabor, but with a renewed fire in my heart, I will be
back to Albano, ready to live the present moment, to do God’s will, so that I
may continue to be in unity with all of you. I feel that Mary, in her town, poured
on us great graces. I pray and I will pray that these graces may be the seed
for a new flourishing of the Religious Branch of the Focolare Movement in
Africa. I see like a sign that we end this meeting on the Independence Day of
this country. Africa must stand on its own feet: the Religious in Africa need
to embrace the Ideal with such decision, that, through the intercession of
Mary, of Chiara and all the members of the Movement, who already populate
heaven, they may take upon themselves the reasonability of spreading the Ideal in
all the religious communities of men and women of Africa. This will be a real
revolution: there will be no more divisions, based of human categories, which
renders fruitless our apostolate, but unity, which will shine and attract the
hearts of many. May the Lord bless you all-
John Marconcini, IMC
This conference has been the first that I have
had in my life as I strive to understand, deepen, live and promote the Ideal of
the Focolare Movement as a religious seminarian. This has enabled me to widen
my scope about the movement, its origin, guiding principles and spirituality
based on the commandment of Jesus: “love one another”, and Jesus great prayer
of unity “May they be one” which I feel has been so motivating and inspiring. Above
all, learning about the life of our foundress Chiara Lubich has been so wonderful to me that I am and
will always be inspired to look to her in all that I do and will do all my life
through. Being ready to say YES to Jesus Christ my redeemer whenever he calls
me do His will.
Liberty de Paul Muzaale, AJ
I have got a wonderful experience from 8th
to 12th December here at the Mariapolis Piero for the short school
of the Religious men. Primarily thanks to the Almighty God for His blessings.
Thanks to Chiara and through her to the
Focolarini were able to organize this wonderful school.
I have really experienced unity of love from
all the people I have met while here at the Mariapolis.
It has been through the different lived vivid
experiences that am able to deepen the spirituality of the Focolare Movement.
Suffering is necessary to attain this love.I have learnt and experienced love
without reserving is the priority for me to move on and be able to grow strong
and strong as the follower of Jesus forsaken. I have really experienced Jesus
amidst us throughout these days and it is my conviction that this will continue
in my life through and through.
The future is our hands, the elders are
showing us the way in love and it is us the young ones to bring hope to the
movement.
Albert Mugisha, AJ

- Thanks to the organizers for the hospitality,
kindness, generosity ……..
- Good place to be, in the City of Mary
(Mariapolis)
- Appreciation to the chief cook

Here the most important themes of this
beautiful workshop:

- God’s university (or school) is a university
of Love.
- Sharing experiences
- God is love. .
- Peace has no contradictory word.
- I will always find it impossible not to
believe in God’s existence from the wonderment of nature.
- If in every moment I love, suffering will
disappear.
- I will try to be the answer of God’s Love.
- God’s love in me will enable me to bring or
share God’s immense love with the unloved, uncared, rejected, isolated,
discriminated, suffering, unwanted, humiliated.
- I am like an empty tabernacle if I don’t
invite Jesus into me.
- I should make God love an assert to bring
about life revolution.
- Love needs time, energy and resources to
become a reality.
- When you forgive, you are always at liberty
each moment, with a new energy to love God, Jesus in the other.
“May
God use me as his own instrument of immense love and to carry the spirit of
love to the whole world for the common good of all”. Amen

Eusebio Manangbao, SVD
It was fine to spend a few days together. The
members of the participants was not high, but it was possible to enter into the
spirituality of the Focolare, thanks to the work of preparation of Leo and the
various members of the Mariapolis. It was good to plan for a follow-up. The
spirituality of the Focolare lays in the young religious. I hope they will
persevere and attract others to do the same. I am happy to have had this
possibility to deepen my choice of this spirituality and to pray God to make us
instruments for the spreading of it among our own the people, wherever we are
sent. The theme of this year, Jesus forsaken, gives meaning to all the
sufferings we have to undergo with the same hope in the resurrection if we will
do his will.

Dear John, thank you for this
number of News and Sharing dated 4 December 2016.
First, thanks to Jos Van
Boxel, M.Afr. for his greetings and unity from the Religious Centre in
Rome...it is good to keep in contact and sharing our life in the Ideal, a great
gift that we received from CHIARA and it is up to us to try to live it and keep
JIM among us even at distance.
WE have just started the New
Year, therefore many greetings and best wishes, and prayers, for the New Year
2017
I read with interest and a bit
of envy about the meeting of Focolare Men Religious at the Mariapolis Piero in
Juja Nairobi. It reminds me of the beautiful meetings and “Scuolette" that
we used to have in the past in Nairobi, when I could take part myself, they
were always moments of intense union and unity and of abundant grace of God for
the vivid presence of the Holy Spirit, who is LOVE.
I see with joy many young
religious, especially Apostles of Jesus, attending it, let us hope and pray
that the fire will keep burning throughout Africa
Of the old members or friends
I can recognize only Bro. Leo van de Weijer, then Celso and you, of
course...time and life passes very fast indeed
I have been transferred
recently from Verona to Como in our Community of elderly (old!) confreres as
one of them, practically in retirement, but we still try to help in the
parishes as far as we can.
Slowly I will have to find out
our "Nucleo" here and see how far I can attend it fisically, anyway
we are always in deep unity in JIM even at distance.
Greetings to you all and best
wishes in JIM

Focolare meeting at the
Apostles of Jesus’s Major Seminary
Those who attended were as
follows: Leo Van de Weijer CMM, Muyesa Peter AJ, Nyanzi Josehp AJ, Oundo Fred
AJ, Niwamanya Zakaayo AJ, Niyoikiiza Dominick AJ, Denis M. Zikamukuba AJ, Christopher
Mananu AJ, Liberty De Paul AJ, Kaggwa Andrew AJ, Anthony Musakulu AJ, Tamiru M.
Barasa AJ, Mungasa Emmanuel AJ, Wanagoli Sistus AJ, Bernard Taban AJ, Mbakhayuni
Stephen AJ, Vincent Niwabiene AJ, Albert Mugisha AJ, Edward Nahwera AJ, Chakuwa
Benjamin AJ, Jerry Okende AJ, . Most of those members are coming from Uganda, Albert
Mugisha is from Tanzania, Leo from Netherlands, Mungasa Emmanuel from Ethiopia.
After an opening prayer and a
song, accompanied by our drums, Leo asked all the members to introduce
themselves. Then Leo read the Word of Life of the month of January, with
beautiful experiences of children. Then he read an article from the magazine
LIVING CITY, followed by a reflection, where he emphasized the importance of
love as Paul tells us to love and act like Jesus Christ. To expressed this love
to Jesus, Leo told them of his experience of praying for all the participants on
his way to the meeting.
Then he invited the group
members to overcome divisions and indifferences by learning to LOVE every one
even those who are not our friends. In whatever situation, God loves me and you
immensely. In addition to that, Bro. Leo invited us members who attended the
meeting to make use of block spot in the website created by Jos Van Boxel.
He later explained the
importance of the Dice of Love, showing how to throw it every day and let be
guided throughout the day by the inspirational sentence written of the top of
it. These are the sentences of the six faces of the Dice: 1. I make myself one
with others, 2. I must be the first to love. 3. I love Jesus in every one. 4. I
love my enemies, 5. I share my joy with others, 6. We love one another. He
quoted Pope Francis in his encyclical letter, which talked about indifferences
in which Pope referred to it as the great sickness of our time. He said,
“Chiara used to refer to dice as an act of loving.
He concluded with the theme of
the year: Jesus Crucified and Forsaken. He explained the conversation, which
Chiara had with a priest, as he was visiting one of her sick friends: “When
Jesus suffered most during his passion?” asked the priest. Chiara replied that
people used to think that he suffered most, when he sweated blood on the garden
of Gethsemane. The priest, in reply, told her that Jesus suffered most on the cross,
when he cried: May God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” Leo called the group
to embrace suffering joyfully since it is not the end of our community or our
lives because through suffering human kind were saved. When we embrace Jesus
forsaken, our sufferings disappeared; we experience peace, joy, the risen Lord.
Jesus forsaken must be everything to us, forget everything in life, wealth, and
rest even including your life only embrace Jesus forsaken in your life. That
was end of his reflections in summary. We ended our meeting with a beautiful
song: Amba, Amba Amuchelela”.
On behalf of other members,
Peter thanked Leo and called for him to come back when he is called for a
meeting and wished him safe journey and abundant blessings upon him. Then we
ended the meeting with refreshment a bottle of soda and some biscuits for each.
May Mary inspire us day and night so that we may by sanctified to become Saints
both on Earth and in Heaven. Amen
Christopher Mananu AJ.

Dear Jos, John, Celso and
Eusebio,
On 14 January we had our first
meeting of 2017 in the compound of the Apostles of Jesus. We started at 3.15 pm
and finished at 5.30 pm. There were 21 participants, almost all from Uganda.
After a short introduction I
presented the Word of life of January and shared a few experiences. After that
I read the editorial of the last News and Sharing and the Christmas thought of
Chiara: Christmas means God loves us.
We had expected the cubes of
love but Charles did not bring them yet from the Focolare center. I explained
the six different points and invited everyone to throw the cube and to live it.
Albert had made contact with Fr.John Marconcini and we could greet one another
to make unity at a distance.
As last point I read an
article from Living city November 2017 where Chiara explained the theme of the
year :A CLEAR CHOICE. We all got a drink and some biscuits and were invited for
a photo.
It was not possible to fix a
date but Albert will contact other religious to see where and when we can meet
in February. Let us continue our journey of unity together. United in JF and MD

Dear Fr John, I hope you are
doing well .Thank you so much for what you are doing and more especially
getting in touch with me in particular. It is so good to hear from you and more
especially having come to Kenya. I read and understood the sharing you send us
from the meeting of Nairobi. It was so inspiring i regretted having missed it. It
came at a time when I had the animate a children workshop, which was held at
the Diocesan headquarters of Fort Portal Diocese. I thought that Bro Tarcis is
to attend it or delegate someone. However , I managed to attend Mariapolis that
was held in Lira and when I returned back still I attended the Update Day
organized by Giovanna and Claudio. It was so wonderful.
I am trying my level best to
move with those who have picked up the spirituality of the Work of Mary and
more especially those who have embraced it, so that all the others may open up
to this new way. Thank you so much for all the communication. We will keep in
touch. Greetings to all.
